One can find articles in today's newspapers, magazines and even the Internet dedicated to this topic. While hate speech has become a common issue in our society, some may ask, what exactly is hate speech? Why do we have to defend it?
To begin with, the general notion of what hate speech is may not be accurate. In fact, there are a number of definitions, which include a wide range of speech that may be critical or offensive. For example, hate speech is offensive speech that advocates the disparagement of a group, a person, a race, religion, nationality, sexual orientation, etc. However, there is another false definition of this issue. It states that those who criticize certain religions, ethnicity, race, nationalities, etc. are actually advocating hatred of their opponents, and therefore should be charged with a hate crime. This would be an absurd statement, and indeed, it is a false equivalency. It would make no sense at all to charge someone who simply stated a fact about a religious organization with committing a hate crime. Many of the best examples of hate speech charges have nothing to do with race, religion, ethnic background, etc. And yet, one has to wonder how often actual comments about religion, ethnicity, race, nationalities, etc. are found to be offensive? It seems that in almost every case of hate speech charges, there is actual, offensive speech that someone is charged with. But then, you have to ask, if this is so, why are so many persons charged with this crime? The truth is that people who have a deep-seated hatred for another group are usually accused of this crime. If they are not allowed to openly express their opinions about that group, they are likely to attempt to use other means to do so. For example, they may make anonymous phone calls, or send letters or e-mails, etc. Many hate speech charges are also politically motivated. The charges are usually based on political opinions about the issue of prejudice. For example, in the case of the illegal immigration issue, one is charged because he or she opposes illegal immigration. While hate speech has always existed, it is not as pervasive as it is today. With the help of a good hate speech essay topics guide, one can learn to accurately identify these incidents.
